The "Medal Rain" continues

10.04.2011 19:03

Philipp Boy and Marcel Nguyen bring two more medals to the German Gymnastics Team. They gain the silver and bronze medal behind Netherland’s Epke Zonderland.

But the women’s floor final was up first. They delivered elegant choreographies and difficult jumping passes to the delight of a sold out arena. Beam and all around European Champion Anna Dementyeva was able to perform all her difficulties. She lost a few tenths of a point due to a shaky finish and her 13.950 points were only worth a 7th place. Teammate Yulia Belokobylskaya’s first jumping pass contained 1,5 twists into a front vault followed by a triple twist and her double somersault at the end was landed solidly. The 15-year-old was awarded 14,450 points and earned the bronze medal.

2008 Olympic Champion Sandra Izbasa from Romania was able to shine at her preferred apparatus. The 20-year- old showed a Tsukahara and triple twist and accumulated 14,500 points. Her lead was thin but enough to win her European gold.

Teammate Diana Chelaru delivered an excellent routine as well. Her Tsukahara, triple twist and double somersault were rewarded with 14.475 points. The young Romanian earned the silver medal behind her experienced teammate.
Last up were the men at the high bar. Loud cheering was followed by dead silence when Philipp Boy was the first to take on the apparatus. He did well: Cassina, Kolman, straight Tkatchev, everything went well. After his dismount – a double somersault with double twist – he was cheered for enthusiastically and was awarded 15.350 points. In addition to his all around gold, he had won the high bar silver medal.

Just like Boy, Marcel Nguyen presented himself in top shape and showed the Kolman und Kovacsalti stooped and crouched. The parallel bars European Champion had a small leap at his landing, then thanked the audience for their support. 15.300 points were enough to earn the 23-year-old a bronze medal.

Epke Zonderland from the Netherlands was up last and kept up the suspense. The ‘Flying Dutchman‘ had an incredible planned element score of 7,7 and despite his few insecurities, he was able to beat everyone. 15.575 points were enough to earn him high bar gold.
