Silver for Oksana

10.04.2011 09:55

The men's floor and pommel horse European Champions have been decided; the women's vault medals have been distributed. Oksana Chusovitina wins silver and Germany's third medal.

More than 6100 spectators watch the five event finals on Saturday. The best of the best fight for the medals; for the men it counts on the floor, the pommel horse and rings, for the women vault and uneven bars are on the agenda.
Anton Golotsutskov from Russia sets high standards with his straight double somersault with double twist. He gets 15,325 points and secures himself a medal – just like he did at the Olympic Games in Beijing. In the end, it's the bronze medal.
Audience favorite Philipp Boy from Germany barely had time to celebrate yesterday's all around success. He almost stepped out of the boundary after his 2,5 backward twist combined with a full forward twist. His transitions were cheered for but he’s unable to hold the landing of his final triple twist. The all around European Champion has to settle for 14,275 points and 8th place.
Israeli Alexander Shatilov took the lead after his floor routine with 15.400 points. In the end, the 24-year-old won the silver. All Around silver medalist Flavius Koczi was unbeatable today. He did have a shaky moment in his second to last jumping pass but the gymnast from Romania presented a solid triple twist at the end. He was thrilled when he saw that he had received the highest score - 15.500 points and with that the title.

Germany's third medal. Chusovitina gets vault silver
The competition continued without interruption. First up on vault was five time Olympian Oksana Chusovitina. The 35-year-old improved her vault in comparison to the qualifying. She landed her first jump – a handspring into a forward somersault with 1,5 twists – with just a small step out and earned an. 14.800  points. Her second vault, the Tsukahara with 1.5 twists, was performed just as well. A small leap at the landing didn't hurt her and she was awarded 14.275 points. The audience cheered when her combined total of 14.537 points was announced and they celebrated Chusovitina's silver.

Sitting in first place after the qualification was Giulia Steingruber from Switzerland. Luck wasn't on her side today and she had to put down her hand on the landing of her handspring into a forward somersault with 1.5 twists. Her second vault was a lot better and she got 14.000 points. But the competition was fierce and she had to settle for a disappointing 6th place. The audience cheered when Elisabeth Seitz took the podium. Her Yurchenko with double twist was rewarded with 14.675 points, her second vault, a handspring into a forward somersault and half twist earned her 13.700 points. In the end, the Mannheim native finished in 5th.
Romanian Sandra Izbasa proved that she was back and treated the audience to two perfect vaults. She performed a Yurchenko with double twist as her first vault and a front vault, half turn into a straight somersault with half twist as her second. The 20-year-old Olympic Champion earned a combined total of 14.675 points and the gold medal. BERLINO, the official mascot congratulated her for her victory.

Vault specialist Ariella Kaeslin was second-to-last and catapulted herself into the medals. Her first vault earned her 14.950 points, the second one, a Yurchenko with double twist, only 14,000 points due to her shaky landing. Still, it was enough to put her in third place.

Next up was the men's pommel horse final. Pommel horse specialist Krisztian Berki from Hungary set high standards with his fantastic routine. 15.625 points were the mark to beat. No one was able to. Sebastian Krimmer showed a routine that was marred only by a shaky dismount. He received 14.325 points and came in fifth.
Harutyum Merdinyan from Armenia and Cyril Tommasone from France tried their best but they weren't able to top the score of 26-year-old Berki. Merdinyan gained 14.950 points and the bronze medal, Tommasone was happy with his 15.050 points and the silver medal.

Romania had earned two and Hungary one of the three titles. And Germany was happy with vault silver.
