Boy wins all around crown

08.04.2011 19:37

Philipp Boy (88,875 Points) proved himself and was able to win the European all around title by a margin. A perfect floor routine ensured him the overall victory. Romanian Flavius Koczi (88,750 points) was a surprise silver medal winner and delivered a strong competition. Marcel Nguyen fell from the high bar and finished in sixth place.

Boy’s direct competition came with Maxim Devyatovskiy (RUS) and Daniel Purvis (GBR).  After the pommel horse, Boy lay in second place (13,825 points) behind Purvis (14,125 points). The gymnast from Cottbus got through his routine without major mistakes yet he was lacking energy. Russian Devyatovskiy  (12,225 Points) was even less fortunate; he fell from the pommel horse. Second in the all around qualification, Nguyen delivered a top rings routine (14,475 points). Koczi, too, took the podium by storm with his vault – Kasamtsu with double twist – and earned 16,100 points.

Winner of the all around qualification, Boy sure was relieved after his rings routine (14,625 Points). Perfect routine, perfect dismount and even 0,600 points more than on Thursday – that was how it was supposed to be. Meanwhile, 23-year-old teammate Nguyen performed at vault: Kasamatsu with 1,5 twists and 15,800 points – he had a minor step out at the landing and lost some tenths of a point. Still, he was able to move up to second place. Vice European Champion to be Koczi was in the lead after the second rotation.

Third place finisher in the qualification, Devyatovskiy, didn’t seem to have one of his best days. In addition to his fall from the pommel horse, he was unable to land his vault cleanly. 14,500 points are way below what the Russian is used at that apparatus. If they hadn’t started yet, Boy and Nguyen started attacking in that third rotation. Boy earned 15,950 points for his vault.

Born in Unterhaching, Nguyen was up at his specialty, the parallel bars. Here, he had been third during the qualifying and he was able to show yet another great routine, including a Tsukahara-dismount. The judged awarded him with 15,325 points. The German all around champion took the overall lead.

At the same time, Boy and his pursuer Purvis dueled. Mere 0,150 points separated the two but the high bar at which the German had received the best score during the qualification was still to come. Next up, however, were the parallel bars and Boy received 14,200 points for his routine. Purvis managed to climb up to fourth with a good performance and 14,575 points. Nguyen’s title ambitions, on the other hand, were crushed. He was unable to grip the high bar after the Kovac somersault and fell from the apparatus. Today, the routine he’s usually flawless at, earned him no more than 13,650 points. Koczi though moved back into the lead.
The Romanian seemed to make no mistakes today. He delivered a flawless pommel horse routine (14,575 Points). Despite a very good floor routine, Nyguyen was unable to take back the lead and even remained behind Ukrainian Mykola Kuksenkov. Boy had shown a good high bar routine (15,125 points) and had moved up to fourth place. It would all come down to the last rotation.

Even though he was flawless at the pommel horse, Nguyen (87,550 Points) wasn’t able to win a medal. He finished in sixth place. Boy, however, triumphed. He showed a nearly perfect floor routine and was able to win the European all around title. His lead over Koczi were a mere 0,05 points. Purvis and Kuksenkov (both 88,350 Points) are sharing the bronze medal. Russian Devyatovskiy (85,875 Points) wasn’t able to find to yesterday’s form and had to settle for ninth place.

The women’s all around final starts at 7 p.m. German Elisabeth Seitz hopes to be able to repeat her fourth place finish from the qualification or maybe even more.
